Between January 1899 and 2024 (that’s 126 January), there were only 28 in which no winter precipitation was recorded.

Of the 98 January months in which freezing weather was recorded, 51 cases had measurable amounts of snow and 44 cases had trace amounts, where snow fell but was too sparse to be measured or frozen precipitation melted as it fell.

There were also three Januarys (1980, 1984 and 1993) that were listed as “ice,” meaning there was freezing rain or drizzle but no snow or sleet.

In the past decade, there have only been two Januarys (2012 and 2016) without a trace of snow, and the largest accumulations in that period occurred when 1.5 inches fell last year and 1.3 inches accumulated in 2023.

Since 1899, there have been 20 Januarys with more than 5 cm of snow.

The top 5 accumulations of all time include:

  • 12.1 inches in 1964
  • 8.2 inches in 1917
  • 7.9 inches in 1948
  • 6.3 inches in 1918
  • 5.5 inches in 1936
