Why isn’t Michelle Obama at Jimmy Carter’s funeral?

As guests arrived at Jimmy Carter’s funeral in Washington, many quickly wondered why Michelle Obama wasn’t among them.

WASHINGTON – The death of former President Jimmy Carter has brought together a who’s who of the top ranks of American political life, with all five living U.S. presidents attending Carter’s funeral.

While all five presidents were present, one dignitary was conspicuously absent from the proceedings.

Michelle Obama, wife of the 44th US President Barack Obama, was not among those attending the service in Washington on Thursday.

Before the funeral, CNN reported that the former first lady had a scheduling conflict and was staying in Hawaii, where she had been on an “extended vacation.”

When asked why she was not present at Carter’s funeral, Michelle Obama’s office issued a statement Thursday saying her thoughts and prayers were with the late former president’s family but otherwise did not say where she was, or the reason for her absence.
