Watts suggests that you should use safe methods to heat your home even during a power outage.

ARKANSAS, USA – With winter weather forecast, Washington County Emergency Management is preparing emergency responders to respond.

In these freezing temperatures, they share tips to avoid common mistakes at home.

Center staff in Lincoln are focused on preparing the community for winter weather. As the major winter storm intensifies, most people are staying home and trying to stay warm. 5NEWS spoke to Deputy Director Willie Watts about how to do this safely.

Winter safety tips

Watts said frozen pipes are one of the biggest problems in extreme cold. To prevent this, he says, start by sealing any cracks. Watts added that insulating your pipes can also make a big difference.

If the worst happens and your pipes freeze, you should call a plumber, he says. Never try to thaw them with an open flame. If you have to do it yourself, he recommends using warm towels or a hairdryer.

Another major problem is power outages. Watts says it’s all about being prepared.

“Have your home ready to respond to the possibility that you may be without power for a day or two. Make sure you have good food supplies and a good water supply. Make sure your cellular devices are charged and ready to go.

Watts suggests that you should use safe methods to heat your home even during a power outage.

“Do not try to heat your home with an external heating device, be it a grill or something similar. Don’t do that. We ask that you do not open your oven doors or turn on your appliances.” Trying to heat your home is dangerous and will result in incidents.

He also says not to forget the little things: check on your neighbors, bring your pets indoors, and stay up to date on weather alerts through local news and weather apps.
