Georgia’s Carson Beck enters transfer portal: source

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck intends to enter the transfer portal, a source briefed on the decision said Thursday.

Beck, a two-year starter for the Bulldogs, announced on December 28 that he was declaring for the 2025 NFL Draft. The 23-year-old, who rushed for 7,912 yards and 58 touchdowns in his career at Georgia, suffered a UCL injury in the SEC championship game in December that required season-ending surgery.

On3 first reported Beck’s plans to enter the portal.

Beck waited three years at Georgia to become a starter, finally getting the job before the 2023 season when he emerged as a star. He considered turning pro but decided to return this season, partly because he wasn’t sure he’d be a good first-round pick and partly because he wanted to continue playing, which he said was one at Georgia There was certainty, but not in the NFL.

Last season, Beck’s numbers declined, particularly his accuracy (64.7 percent, down from 72.4 percent in 2023). But Georgia still won the SEC Championship despite Beck sitting out in the second half of the win over Texas but stepping up on the final handoff to clinch the win.

“If you look at the stats, obviously they’re not the same as last year,” Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said of Beck. “But the goal when you play in this league is to win the SEC championship. And he was the quarterback of that team that got us to this game and put us in this position.”

Beck underwent surgery in mid-December, with Georgia saying only that Beck would be able to “throw in the spring.” Neither Beck nor anyone in his camp has publicly commented on a timetable for a return since his injury.

When Beck was injured, Georgia turned to redshirt sophomore Gunner Stockton, who led the team in the second half and overtime of the SEC Championship and then in the Sugar Bowl. Although Georgia lost that game and the offense struggled, Stockton played relatively well, passing for 234 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. But the team seemed to miss Beck’s experience and game management.

It’s not clear if Georgia and Beck have discussed his return.

“Carson’s injury was serious and needed to be repaired and addressed and that’s exactly what he did. This is what’s best for his long-term future,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said before the Sugar Bowl. “And he met some really good people who had dealt with this injury before and made this decision based on his career and his future.”
