Very few people braved the wintry weather at White Rock Lake Park on Thursday morning. A handful of joggers, cyclists and dog walkers circled the lake as freezing rain and snow fell in the area.

Sara Fitzsimmons, 36, said she trains at Camp Gladiator and was at the camp when the first sleet fell early in the morning. She said she came to see what White Rock Lake looked like in the snow and said she always comes to the spillway when it rains.

She said it appears this freeze will be milder than in the past, such as the 2021 winter storm. Fitzsimmons said she prepared for the weather by getting lots of firewood and she plans to spend the rest of the year Spend the day by the fire.

Snow was reported throughout Dallas County and other areas of Dallas-Fort Worth, including Collin County. State and local officials urged drivers to remain cautious as roads in North Texas were covered in snow.

The Texas Department of Transportation has applied brine to major highways in preparation for the winter storms that began Thursday morning, but road conditions could worsen throughout the day, officials warned.

“Temperatures are still just above freezing, but as they drop and there is more precipitation, conditions can quickly become slippery and dangerous,” said TxDOT spokeswoman Kenna Mitchell.

Garbage pickup in Dallas has been canceled for the remainder of Thursday due to road conditions, city officials say.

Any households with late trash and/or recycling pickup will have it done on Friday or this weekend. Customers with Friday routes may also experience delays in pickup.

The winter conditions have also caused all city libraries to close at 4 p.m. on Thursday. The current plan is for them all to reopen on Friday at 1 p.m.

The National Weather Service’s Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisory are expected to remain in effect until noon Friday.
