Colleges and schools in Georgia will close Friday as the storm approaches

Several dozen school districts and colleges in the Atlanta area and across north Georgia are canceling classes or switching to digital learning as the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the region Friday morning.

Gwinnett County, the state’s largest school district, is planning a digital learning day. The Cobb County School System, the second largest school district in the state, is closing its schools and offices Friday. DeKalb County is planning an “asynchronous independent learning day.” The City Schools of Decatur will also close Friday. Rockdale County will have an independent learning day. Fulton County Schools will operate remotely on Friday. Atlanta Public Schools and the Paulding County School District will close Friday. All extracurricular activities scheduled for Friday and Saturday in both districts have been canceled. APS students have assigned classwork but cannot log into class remotely. The district says schools will contact families regarding assigned work.

Many of the region’s largest private schools, such as Greater Atlanta Christian School and Lovett School, announced no in-person classes Friday.

In north Georgia, some school districts announced closure plans Wednesday. The Polk County school system posted a message on its website Wednesday morning that it will move to a “learn from home day” on Friday. All extracurricular activities/sports events for Friday and Saturday will be postponed and rescheduled at a later date.

“We apologize for any inconvenience, but we will always make decisions in the best interest of our students and staff and keep safety as our top priority,” officials said in the statement.

Gordon County announced Wednesday afternoon that it will close its schools Friday. “Students will bring home any missing assignments, including work for their reading logs, spelling, vocabulary, or other class work to complete if they have not already done so in school,” the district said.

On Thursday, public school systems in Rabun, Towns and Union, counties in the state’s northeastern Appalachian region, announced there would be no in-person classes on Friday.

The University of Georgia announced Thursday that it will close its Athens campus and move to modified operations on Friday. All dining rooms will remain open, but opening will be delayed by one hour on Friday and closing times may be adjusted if weather conditions warrant. Campus transit will end as scheduled at 3 a.m. Friday and will resume when weather conditions safely permit.

Georgia Tech announced it would move to a “Digital Learning Day” on Friday. This means that there will be no face-to-face teaching, but individual lecturers are free to move the lessons online or cancel them completely.

Emory University, the state’s largest private university, is moving to remote learning. This also applies to Oglethorpe University. Georgia Gwinnett College announced it will move to a virtual mode on Friday.

The Atlanta University Center Consortium has scheduled remote surgeries for Friday. The consortium includes Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse and Spelman Colleges, and the Morehouse School of Medicine.

South of Atlanta, Clayton County school officials announced plans to close the district Friday, saying it will be a day off for staff. “Students will have access to classroom activities for optional asynchronous learning,” the district said on its website. Henry County Schools will also be closed Friday. This also applies to Bibb County Schools.

Other school districts, such as Barrow, Forsyth and Gordon, said on their websites that they will closely monitor the forecast and make decisions as necessary.
