The latest on Abdul Carter, Jeremiyah Love ahead of the Orange Bowl

MIAMI – Penn State defensive end Abdul Carter And Notre Dame run back Jeremiyah love Both took part in pregame warmups here at Hard Rock Stadium ahead of tonight’s College Football Playoff semifinal. Everyone will likely play fewer snaps than usual. However, both are expected to take the field this evening. Carter injured his left shoulder in the Fiesta Bowl. His upper arm was heavily wrapped and he wore a blue sleeve on that arm, something he doesn’t normally do. Love, meanwhile, wore a brace over his right knee that he had adjusted in the Fighting Irish’s regular-season finale and again in the Sugar Bowl.

“I’m told he’s dealing with a shoulder injury and is expected to be back around 85 percent tonight,” ESPN’s Pete Thamel said on “College GameDay.” “Guys, he averages 46 snaps a game. I’m told he won’t be taking as many snaps tonight. Make sure it can be worked on situationally – pass rush downs. It will be a problem with the pain tolerance threshold. James Franklin called it a game-time decision. Expect him to play, but be limited.”

However, nothing in Carter’s warmup suggested he might be limited. He worked as usual with the first team defensive line. However, for example, if a teammate or a fellow defender is eliminated Dani Dennis Sutton was injured earlier this year, it’s possible the All-American will play almost or exclusively on passes.

When it comes to love, he too may be limited. He leads the Fighting Irish in rushing yards. Backup Jadarian Prize gets more carries if Love plays less than usual.

“Tonight it will be around 75 to 80 percent,” Thamel reported. “At that percentage for Love, Riley Leonard should really be making a lot of designed quarterback runs.”

The Orange Bowl between Penn State and Notre Dame begins at approximately 7:45 p.m. ET. ESPN will televise the competition. The Fighting Irish were the favorites all week, reaching -2.5 at times. But within two hours of kick-off the score was reversed. The Nittany Lions are now the favorites by 1.5 points. The over/under is 45.5 points. An almost sold-out crowd is expected here, as fans of both teams have traveled a long way for this semi-final game. The winner advances to the CFP national title game. That’s January 20th in Atlanta, Georgia, site of the Peach Bowl.
