Thanks to Sam Carrick’s OT goal, the Rangers get a thrilling win over the Devils

After losing to Dallas in overtime in their last game, the Rangers earned a much-needed 3-2 overtime win against the Devils at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night.

The Rangers were hoping to make amends against their New Jersey rival after losing 10-1 to the Devils in their previous two meetings.

After a feed from Reilly Smith they beat Sam Carrick’s winner with 2:12 left in stoppage time.

Mika Zibanejad had a chance to win earlier in stoppage time, but couldn’t get a good shot on a breakaway midway through the period.

The win helped offset two ugly losses to the Devils, the most recent of which came when the Devils mocked the Rangers on social media and compared the Blueshirts to a dumpster fire.

With Igor Shersterkin back in net after missing the last four games with an upper body injury, the Rangers put up a much better fight on Thursday.

They entered having lost 11 of their last 15 games and 17 of 23, while the Devils had lost four of five.

The Rangers took the lead with 12:05 left in the first period thanks to a power play goal from Adam Fox, who ended up firing it past Jacob Markstrom.

It was Fox’s first goal of the season without an empty net and came on a faceoff win by Vincent Trocheck.

Shesterkin was strong, making 11 saves in the first half, although the Devils almost took an early lead when Nico Hischier deflected a shot from Luke Hughes and it went past Shesterkin but hit the crossbar.

The Rangers also converted two penalties in the opening period after the Devils went 5-for-8 in their first two outings.

The Devils tied the game at 1-1 early in the first period when Jack Hughes scored his 16th goal of the season – and his fifth in three games against the Rangers – by deflecting in a Brett Pesce shot at 4:03.

Shesterkin stopped a close-range shot from Dawson Mercer later in the period, but Jesper Bratt beat Shesterkin at 8:28 to give the Devils a 2-1 lead.

This came after the Rangers squandered a shorthanded breakaway midway through the second half that would have given them the lead when Smith dropped the ball to Trocheck, whose shot missed the net.

The Rangers evened the score at 2-2 at 17:13 of the second minute with their second power play goal of the night, a goal by Artemi Panarin that came off a rebound from a Zibanejad shot.

It was Panarin’s 17th goal of the season.

The Rangers were lively in front of the Devils’ goal early in the third period and had the first eight shots of the quarter but were unable to capitalize.

Shesterkin stuffed Mercer on a shorthand breakaway midway through the third.

The Devils controlled much of the action in the second half of the third period before Trocheck was substituted late in the quarter.
