Impressive winter weather arrives early Friday

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – A winter storm warning is in effect from early Friday until 7 a.m. Saturday.

Snow begins to fall across western Alabama around 4 a.m. and then quickly spreads east into the early morning hours.

Snow is likely to accumulate immediately, reaching 1 to 2 inches in some areas by 8 a.m. Snowfall rates will increase mid-morning as large snowflakes reduce visibility. Across northern Alabama and southern middle Tennessee, roads will become dangerous during the morning hours and travel is discouraged unless absolutely necessary.

By 11 a.m. snow totals will range from 1 to 2 inches in the southern counties of our viewing area and up to 3 and 6 inches in far northwest Alabama and parts of Tennessee.

By midday we expect the snow to turn to sleet. Sleet could be heavy at times with up to 2 inches of sleet accumulating in some areas. Remember that sleet is an ice pellet and does not accumulate on power lines or trees. Around 1 p.m. we saw a transition to freezing rain.

Total amounts of freezing rain could reach up to a quarter of an inch in some areas, posing a threat to trees and power lines. At this time, this appears most likely in parts of northeast Alabama.

We will keep a close eye on this throughout the event. Areas of northwest Alabama and along the Tennessee state line could see snow until the evening. This is where we expect the highest amounts of snowfall.
