Notre Dame battles through a last-minute field goal against Penn State to advance to the CFP national championship

Notre Dame is playing for a national title for the first time in 12 seasons.

Mitch Jeter hit a 41-yard field goal with seven seconds left to give the Fighting Irish a 27-24 victory over Penn State in the Orange Bowl on Thursday night. The Irish will play in the College Football Playoff title game on Jan. 20 against the winner of Friday’s Ohio State vs. Texas game.

The kick came after Notre Dame’s Christian Gray intercepted Penn State’s Drew Allar in Penn State territory with 33 seconds left.

    Drew Allar’s late INT and Mitch Jeter’s kick made the difference in the end. Notre Dame travels to Atlanta to face the winner of Ohio State-Texas.

    It’s Nicholas Singleton in the end zone for his third touchdown of the night and the Nittany Lions are ahead with just under 8 minutes to play!

  • Notre Dame’s interception was negated by a penalty

    PSU’s Drew Allar just lobbed a ball right into the arms of a Notre Dame defender in the end zone, but a referee threw a flag for pass interference, so it was all for naught.

    Riley Leonard throws his second pick of the game and it’s a brutal one. Dani Dennis-Sutton jumped up and the Nits will have it at ND 39.

    The Nittany Lions tied the score thanks to a hard run by Nicholas Singleton from the 10 zone. Things are going well at the Orange Bowl!

    Now it’s the Nits who move the ball at will. After a long pass from Drew Allar to Khalil Dinkins, they are over midfield and in the red zone.

    This game has turned. Penn State, which bullied Notre Dame in the first half, is gone.

    The Irish are moving the ball as the third quarter comes to an end. At the start of the fourth quarter the score will be 3-3 and 2-1 at the PSU 35.

    The dynamic has shifted. Notre Dame just stuffed PSU on its first possession of the second half and will have the ball back and a chance to take its first lead of the game.

    Well, the Irish are wide awake now! They won just the first possession of the second half for 75 yards in eight plays and scored on a short run by Riley Leonard.
