Several North Texas counties, including Collin, Dallas, Denton, Kaufman and Tarrant, are under a winter storm warning set to expire at noon Friday. The winter weather advisory for Ellis County is also scheduled to expire at noon.

There is a slight chance of severe weather and freezing rain in the area before 9 a.m. Friday, according to a detailed forecast from the National Weather Service in Fort Worth. Otherwise, the day will be mostly cloudy with highs in the late 30s before clear conditions set in Friday evening, followed by freezing temperatures falling into the low 20s.

Forecasters said road conditions in the Dallas-Fort Worth area will worsen Thursday night into Friday morning. However, conditions in the Metroplex are expected to improve in the late morning and early afternoon as the mercury temperature rises above freezing.

Several area school district and government offices will remain closed overnight and into Friday due to weather conditions.

Another overnight frost is expected in the region Friday evening, according to NWS Fort Worth. “Temperatures will be so cold that any liquid on the roads will freeze, and black ice could become a problem,” the forecaster warned.

A forecast discussion from NWS Fort Worth Thursday evening showed snow totals for areas generally along and north of Interstate 20 are expected to be 2 to 6 inches. Totals of 5 to 8+ inches are expected in areas near the Red River.
