A new Netflix western drama has taken the violent TV trend to a new level, with viewers branding the series “very graphic and disturbing” after its premiere.

The six-part program follows a mother on the run during the brutal Utah War of 1857, in which Mormons, the U.S. Army and Native Americans fought for the American West.

Subscribers can’t stop watching “American Primeval,” even though some scenes are so gory that fans were often forced to watch them from behind the sofa.

The premise itself promised violence as the entire drama revolves around a bitter ten-month conflict in which 120 people were killed in one massacre alone as the war proved inconclusive.

It starred GLOW breakout star Betty Gilpin as on-the-run mother Sara and True Detective actor Taylor Kitsch as lone wolf Isaac.

Gunfights, ax fights and gruesome battles broke out at every turn, and spectators took to social media to express their shock at the level of violence.

Another posted: “An episode and a half of American Primeval on Netflix.” The only thing I can say at this point is: graphic and brutal. Eye-opening if you stay true to the times.’

Meanwhile, a shocked viewer took to Reddit and said: “Based on the first two episodes, highly recommended but I’ve seen a lot of violent media in my time and this show is very graphic and disturbing.”

“American Primeval” follows in the footsteps of the 1880s-set Western drama “Yellowstone,” which stars Kevin Costner, in continuing the trend of increasingly violent, award-winning TV shows.

The series featured increasingly prominent shootings, lynchings and poisonings, with many emphasizing the mercilessness of some of the murders.

Meanwhile, the 59-time Emmy Award-winning fantasy drama Game Of Thrones was known for its violence, including gruesome child mortality and violence against women.

On this side of the Atlantic, “Gangs of London” has raised the flag of ultraviolence with scenes like one character’s exploding eye and another’s blood-belching arteries, dividing the opinions of critics and viewers alike.

“American Primeval” goes one step further and in some moments shows US history in its most miserable and brutal form.
