Winter storm Cora threatens the south with snow and ice: signs of weather

As Southern California continues to grapple with multiple devastating wildfires, a massive winter storm will bring heavy snow and ice across the southern United States to around 50 million people.

According to the National Weather Service, Winter Storm Cora will spread across parts of Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas Friday through Saturday. Six to 10 feet of snow is expected from eastern Oklahoma to the Mid-South and southern Appalachians.

Snow will turn to sleet and freezing rain in parts of the Southeast, as well as northeast Texas and southern Arkansas, the service reported. Meteorologists warn that icy conditions ranging from a tenth to a quarter of an inch of ice will make travel dangerous for many. Power outages and fallen branches are also concerns.

At least 50 million people were under a winter storm warning as of Thursday as the storm moved along the Gulf Coast on Friday, according to the weather service. The storm was expected to weaken by Saturday, bringing lighter snowfall between 1 and 3 inches to parts of the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley before exiting the Carolinas.

The weather service in Atlanta warned that freezing rain could cause damage along and north of the Interstate 20 corridor through Friday.

This came after a massive storm brought severe winter weather across much of the country, including northeast Kansas and north-central Missouri, with about 15 inches of snow falling.

Atlanta, Georgia Weather Forecast

According to the NWS, forecast snow totals for the Atlanta region have decreased as confidence increased in a transition to a wintry mix or freezing rain during the day Friday.

Far north Georgia still looks like that’s where the most snow will fall, with 2 to 3 inches forecast, with locally higher amounts of up to 4 to 5 inches, the weather service said.

Nashville, Tennessee Weather Forecast

According to the weather service, snow is expected to fall across Middle Tennessee Friday morning, with the heaviest snowfall occurring in the late morning and afternoon hours.

Nashville and surrounding areas are expected to see 4 to 6 inches of snow, with areas west of Nashville, such as Waverly, possibly seeing between 6 and 8 inches, the NWS said.

The weather service said Friday morning that Middle Tennessee is expected to experience travel impacts Friday, particularly during the evening rush hour and into Saturday. The cold temperatures could mean that travel disruptions continue until Sunday.

Charlotte, North Carolina Weather Forecast

The Charlotte area will experience a mix of wintry weather Friday morning, with snow, sleet and ice expected through Friday evening, the NWS said.

According to the weather service, snow and sleet accumulations will be highest in the southern and northern mountains of North Carolina, with the lowest amounts expected south of I-85.

While Charlotte is only expected to see 1 to 2 inches of snow, areas of northwest and northern North Carolina could see between 3 and 6 inches of snow.

Birmingham, Alabama Weather Forecast

According to the NWS, widespread precipitation is expected across central Alabama through midday Friday, with a wintry mix expected in the northern portion of central Alabama, transitioning to rain by the afternoon, except at higher elevations in northeastern counties.

By the afternoon, wintry precipitation will transition to rain in most areas, the weather service said.

According to the weather service, impacts from wintry weather are likely through Friday evening, including “dangerous or impossible” driving conditions across the northern half of central Alabama, with dangerous driving conditions extending further south.

Tusla, Oklahoma Weather Forecast

Eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas are expected to see between 3 and 12 inches of snow, with the Tulsa area in particular expected to see between 3 and 8 inches of snow, according to the NWS.

A winter storm warning is in effect for Tulsa and the east until midday Friday. Dangerous travel and a possible power outage are to be expected.

Little Rock, Arkansas Weather Forecast

Between 6 and 8 inches of snow fell in areas of northern, western and central Arkansas as of 5 a.m. CST Friday, according to the weather service.

The NWS said Thursday afternoon that a “large portion” of the state would experience heavy snowfall, with some areas eventually seeing up to 12 inches of snow.

Fort Worth, Texas Weather Forecast

A winter storm warning remains in effect for portions of North and Central Texas through midday Friday as light snow or freezing drizzle may lead to minor ice accumulations during the morning hours, primarily on elevated surfaces, the NWS said.

Road conditions are expected to improve throughout much of North Texas during the morning. However, conditions along the Red River will not improve until early to late afternoon, according to the weather service.

“Any water on the roads will refreeze tonight into Saturday morning, bringing dangerous conditions to North Texas,” the NWS said Friday morning.
