ODOT shares update on road conditions in Oklahoma

Oklahoma Department of Transportation crews are working to clear major thoroughfares across the state, the state agency said.

ODOT says roads across the state have become slick and dangerous due to winter rainfall and are being plowed and treated to ensure driver safety.

ODOT also said Oklahoma Turnpike Authority crews are working to plow and treat the HE Bailey Turnpike, Chickasaw Turnpike and Indian Nation Turnpike; OTA crews are also treating slick spots along the John Kilpatrick Turnpike, Kickapoo Turnpike and Turner Turnpike.

In the Oklahoma City metro, ODOT said crews are plowing and working highways and interstates, but is encouraging drivers not to do so Avoid traveling if possible or drive more slowly.

ODOT said real-time road conditions and photos from the plow trucks can be viewed at okroads.org or through the free Drive Oklahoma app.

Drivers are asked:

  1. Stay approximately 200 feet behind and do not pass road clearing equipment. Crews need room to maneuver and can begin plowing or distributing materials without notice.
  2. Leave additional space between vehicles to ensure sufficient braking distance.
  3. Watch out for black ice that looks wet on the road but is actually just a thin layer of ice.
  4. Be patient, plan trips in advance and allow extra time to reach your destination.
