On Friday, early snow showers will alternate throughout the day and it will become wintry

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for all North Alabama and Middle Tennessee counties until 6:00 a.m. CST Saturday. Snow showers have developed overnight and will continue to spread into the early hours of this morning.

This first round of snow will be the heaviest for this winter event. High snowfall rates could lead to poor visibility and dangerous travel conditions across the region. Morning snow totals will likely be in the 1 to 3 inch range, with the highest totals (2 to 5 inches) over northwest Alabama. Snow showers will remain over the area until around 10 a.m. before temperatures begin to rise above freezing. As the air warms, we will see a sharp transition from snow showers to mostly sleet and possibly freezing rain. Sleet particles will continue to accumulate on roads and on snow that fell earlier today.

Areas south of the Tennessee River and higher elevation areas over northeast Alabama have the greatest chance of light ice (0.05″ to 0.25″) developing during this late morning/afternoon round. As temperatures drop again during the evening, most precipitation should transition back to light snow or thunderstorms, with up to an additional 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters possible. Travel is expected to remain difficult across the region this evening into Saturday as temperatures fall below freezing again and roads become icy across the area.

Severe weather is expected to continue through Saturday morning, with morning temperatures in the mid to upper 20s. Melting will begin late Saturday morning and travel conditions will continue to improve across the area. Sunday will be sunny and warmer with high temperatures in the upper 30s to lower 40s. Next week will be calm and dry with highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s.
