New England maps show snowstorm totals and track

New England will see its next shower of weather on Saturday, but all signs point to the region missing out on the most intense precipitation. That’s because the storm is expected to move well offshore to the south.

Most New Englanders can expect to see a layer of up to 2 inches on Saturday – about 1 inch in the Boston area and south to Rhode Island and up to 3 inches in isolated spots in New Hampshire and Vermont . The freezing air has kept the ground frozen, allowing snow to accumulate relatively quickly.

A weakening system approaching from the Great Lakes will tap into some of the moisture from a strong storm moving just south, producing widespread light snow showers early Saturday that will last into the afternoon.

Greater Boston, North and South Shores: Scattered to steady snow showers on Saturday morning, lasting into the early afternoon. Snow showers could return along the immediate coast in the late afternoon and evening, providing additional light snowfall. It looks like there could be 1 to 2 inches of snow, with one or two isolated spots reaching 3 inches, especially north of Boston.

Central and Western Fair: When you wake up on Saturday, there will be light snowfall, expected to be around 1 inch, with an isolated chance of 2 inches, especially in the higher elevations of the Berkshires. The snow should ease off around midday.

Rhode Island: It looks more like a layer of up to an inch will extend across the state, with snow falling through midday and lingering snow showers continuing through most of the afternoon.

New Hampshire and Vermont: Every state should see scattered to consistent snow showers Saturday morning and early afternoon. Most will see about 1 to 2 inches, with 3 inches possible in the higher elevations of northern Vermont and New Hampshire. Across coastal New Hampshire, some spots could see 3 inches, with some snow showers returning onshore later in the day.

Maine: Across most of Maine, the storm should push through, dropping light snow in bursts that will only be about an inch deep. Some people closer to the New Hampshire border, particularly along the coast toward Portland, could see 2 to 3 inches before the storm moves away later this afternoon.
