What is snow ice? This recipe is the perfect snow day activity in Tennessee

It’s a classic snow day delicacy and the perfect complement to a cup of hot cocoa.

Snow ice is an icy mixture of vanilla, sugar and some fresh snow from your garden. It only takes three ingredients and a few minutes to prepare.

Once you’ve made the snow ice cream, you can top it with chocolate sauce, caramel, rainbow sprinkles, or whatever your heart desires. For a grown-up twist on this childhood treat, try using bourbon and milk instead of sweetened condensed milk.

Here’s a recipe from Southern Kitchen. Try it!

Ingredients:

  • 8 cups of snow (the fun is collecting it!)

  • 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

Place snow or shaved ice in a large bowl. Pour condensed milk over it and add vanilla. Mix to combine. Serve immediately in bowls.

Is it safe to eat snow?

According to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, snow is harmless in most cases. The safest snow to consume is the whitest, fluffiest top layer of fallen snow, furthest from the ground.

However, there are some general rules you should follow when collecting said snow. Don’t eat discolored snow. Seriously, don’t do it.

Although the snow you eat likely contains traces of atmospheric pollutants, snow is safe to eat and used in moderation for snow ice.
