Aston Villa came from behind to beat West Ham United 2-1 in the third round of the FA Cup on Friday after a controversial Amadou Onana goal and a Morgan Rogers strike denied Graham Potter a win in his first game in charge of the visitors .

A day after Potter was introduced as a replacement for Julen Lopetegui, Lucas Paquetá put West Ham on the scoresheet in the ninth minute when Crysencio Summerville played a square ball across the penalty area which the Brazilian fired into the net.

But Villa got into the game and Onana equalized in the 71st minute from a controversial corner, with Lukasz Fabianski parrying Ian Maatsen’s shot before the midfielder hammered the ball into the goal.

West Ham argued that the corner should not have been given and television replays showed they were right as Onana fired the ball from the goal line with no visiting player near the goal line.

“We are surprised that it was a corner. But the referee gave it. There’s nothing we can do now,” Potter told the BBC.

Five minutes later, Rogers scored the winning goal for the hosts, directing Ollie Watkins’ pass into the corner.

“It shows a lot of confidence in the dressing room that we know we can come back against anyone,” Rogers told ITV.

Villa were eliminated in the fourth round by Chelsea last year but have now reached this stage in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2014-15 and 2015-16.

“I’m very happy because we played a very good game,” said Villa coach Unai Emery. “We are becoming stronger and more impressive. We finished strong. The win is very important for self-confidence.”

Injuries were the story of a largely dull first half, with West Ham losing striker Niclas Füllkrug after 16 minutes to a thigh problem before Villa’s Ross Barkley hobbled off with an apparent ankle problem seven minutes later.

The east London club deservedly took a 1-0 lead at half-time, but Villa increased their lead after the break and took the lead.

West Ham striker Danny Ings had two great chances in stoppage time, but his first shot was blocked by Rogers and he couldn’t get his feet back on the second shot. He threw the ball high and far as it fell, Potter burying his head in his hands.

“The players had a big week, a difficult week,” said the former Chelsea manager. “We need to rest and refresh.”

In the other duel of the evening, League One club Wycombe Wanderers prevailed with a 2-0 home win over Championship side Portsmouth thanks to goals from Brandon Hanlan and Sonny Bradley.
