Mel Gibson’s Malibu home was destroyed by the Los Angeles wildfires while he was recording a podcast with Joe Rogan in Austin, Texas, Gibson revealed.

The Oscar-winning actor and director shared the news during a phone interview with NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports.

Gibson said he was fine after the destruction.

“Obviously it’s pretty devastating. It’s emotional,” he said. “You’ve lived there for a long time and had all your things. Do you remember (comedian) George Carlin talking about your stuff? I had my things there and it felt like I had been freed from the burden of my things because everything was in ashes.”

Gibson said he felt “uncomfortable” during the podcast with Rogan because he knew his neighborhood was on fire.

“When I got home, (the house) actually wasn’t there,” he told Vargas. “I went home and said to myself, ‘At least I don’t have any of those annoying plumbing problems anymore.'”

He said he and his girlfriend evacuated, but she stayed in Calfornia while he went to Texas to do the podcast.

“I’ve never seen a place so completely burned,” Gibson said of his destroyed home. “You could put it in an urn.”

Other celebrities, including Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Billy Crystal, Jeff Bridges, Paris Hilton, Ricki Lake and Miles Teller’s wife Keleigh, have spoken out about losing their homes.

Moore shared an update on Instagram on Thursday, writing that she was able to visit her home in Altadena and “witness all this loss,” and included three photos of the remains of her home in the post.

“Miraculously, the main part of our house is still standing. Currently. It is not habitable but is mostly intact,” Moore wrote. She added that they lost their garage and back house in the fire.

In a statement to CNN on Wednesday, Crystal said: “Words cannot describe the extent of the devastation we are witnessing and witnessing. We mourn our friends and neighbors who also lost their homes and businesses in this tragedy.”

“Janice and I had lived in our house since 1979. We raised our children and grandchildren here. Every inch of our house was filled with love. Beautiful memories that can’t be taken away,” he added.

“We are of course heartbroken, but with the love of our children and friends we will get through this.” We pray for the safety of the firefighters and first responders. The Pacific Palisades is a resilient community of great people and we know that in time it will rise again. It’s our home.”

Oscar-winning actor Bridges’ family beach house was also destroyed by fire. According to his representative, he and his relatives are safe.

Actress and former talk show host Lake shared on her Instagram page Wednesday that she lost her “dream home” to the fires, writing, “It’s all gone.”

“It was our heaven on earth. The place where we wanted to grow old together. “We never took for granted our heavenly spot on the cliff overlooking our beloved Malibu, not even for a second,” she wrote. Lake added that she is grieving the “immeasurable” loss of the home where she and her husband were married three years ago.

An earlier version of this story contained a typo in Joe Rogan’s name and an inaccurate word in a quote. It has been corrected.
