Buckeyes defeat Longhorns and secure ticket to national championship

The college football national championship game is on after Ohio State beat Texas in a playoff semifinal on Friday in Arlington, Texas.

Ohio State defeated Texas 28-14 in the Cotton Bowl after forcing two crucial turnovers in the final 2 minutes, 13 seconds.

The Buckeyes will face Notre Dame, which defeated Penn State a day earlier, in the national title game on Jan. 20 in Atlanta. It’s a duel between two of the sport’s traditional powerhouses that will cap the first year of the expanded 12-team playoffs. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman played at Ohio State. The Irish haven’t won a national title since 1988, while the Buckeyes last won a title a decade ago.

Late in the fourth quarter, Ohio State was defending its 21-14 lead when, with eight yards to go, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers fumbled the ball under pressure from Jack Sawyer, a defensive end from Ohio State who had played three years earlier Freshmen lived with Ewers in Columbus. Sawyer returned the fumble 83 yards for a touchdown and a 28-14 lead with just over two minutes left in the game.

Ohio State then intercepted Ewers on the ensuing drive to secure their spot in the program’s first national title game since 2015.

Texas trailed 7-0 and 14-7, only to tie the game each time behind one of the best defenses in the country, which held Ohio State’s star wideout Jeremiah Smith to just one catch for three yards. Ewers finished the game with 283 passing yards and two touchdowns to go along with his interception while completing 23 of his 39 passes.

Ohio State quarterback Will Howard, who was 0-3 in his career against Texas while at Kansas State, ultimately defeated the Longhorns with a pass for 289 yards and a touchdown – a screen pass just seconds before halftime TreVeyon Henderson converted a 75-yard pass for a score – and an interception.
