Nathan Fillion Teases ‘Complications’ for Nolan and Bailey in Season 7 (Exclusive)

(Warning: The following contains MAJOR spoilers for The newbie “The Shot” season 7 premiere.

To describe John Nolan in one word: He’s “frustrated,” says Nathan Fillion, that his wife Bailey’s (Jenna Dewan) sociopathic ex-husband, Jason (Steve Kazee), is still free in the end The newbie Seventh season premiere.

But the episode starts with Nolan thinking they’re going to get him, except Jason isn’t at the location where they’re raiding. “There is a lot at stake. Jason is extremely stubborn. “He’s psychotically stubborn and has his sights set on the love of Nolan’s life,” Fillion notes in the debut of Booked: The Rookie Aftershow. (Watch the full video above.)

“So there’s a lot at stake and if he feels he can do something about it, then of course he feels like he’s taking care of the people he loves. But if it doesn’t work out, it’s a loose end and John can’t let that happen,” he continues.

Bailey has been assigned to the National Guard, and although that is about to end, her stay has been extended to keep her safe outside the country. But Fillion is quick to point out, “Bailey is not a damsel in distress. She is a woman who can take care of herself. It kills John, of course, even though it’s his job to run straight into danger, just like hers – and I guess you could say she has more experience with the military too.”

The good news is that this won’t put a strain on their relationship. “They remain solid for the future,” promises Fillion. “There will be complications, there will be things that are problematic in their relationship, as there are in all relationships.” I think that’s the reality. But I don’t think that drives a wedge between them. I think it brings them closer together.” But it’s also something they need to keep in mind when it comes to future conversations about adoption.

The premiere also featured something Fillion has been suggesting for years: Nolan commandeering a scooter to pursue a suspect (which pays off!). It’s such a thing beginner move.

“I was kind of surprised at how fast they go,” the star admits. “I wasn’t really prepared for that. I wasn’t wearing a helmet. I tend not to get into a vehicle that requires balance, A without a helmet, and B falling off at any speed faster than I’m comfortable with. And we did a nice little stunt there where I drove right into a young lady and knocked her over on her scooter. It seems simple, but you’re trying not to actually hurt anyone and you’re trying not to get hurt at the same time. But it was nice to finally be able to do it. I’m telling you, I’ve been saying this for ages.”

Watch the full interview above, in which Fillion breaks down the premiere (including the shot at the end), teases what’s in store for Nolan and Bailey, his dynamic with Celina (Lisseth Chavez) as she progresses in her training, and more.
