• Nick Hargrove (devotion) as Cottrell. This young man helps out at Fort Bridger and serves as Jim Bridger’s right-hand man.

• Joe Tippett (Easttown mare, The Morning Show) as James Wolsey. This Mormon leads a militia of men who do not possess the moral code they claim to possess.

Where was American prehistoric era filmed?

After 130 days of filming American prehistoric eraonly two(!) were filmed indoors. The remainder was all filmed on location in New Mexico, including locations such as Pueblo de Cochiti, Santa Clara Pueblo, Bonanza Creek Ranch, Parajito Mountain Ski Area and Charles R Ranch.

When expanding the scope of American prehistoric eraBerg was inspired by his love of the Robert Redford film Jeremiah Johnson. “When I saw it as a child, I felt like I was in the middle of it,” says the director. “I was exposed to the elements…just surviving, and that’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”

American prehistoric era was Berg, Newman and Smith’s chance to go into the mountains of New Mexico and give viewers such an immersive experience. “If ever anything was easier said than done, it’s this,” Newman says. “I believe we will all forever be haunted by the words ‘it’s snowing’ or ‘night, outer night’ in scripts.”

During filming, the actors braved the weather their characters faced in 1857, trudging through snow, rain, thunder and lightning, with rattlesnake cameos being commonplace. Kitsch wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. “When you’re in the 15th hour of filming and you’re cold and beyond exhausted, everything comes into play,” the actor said. “There is nothing better than taking photos on location. I loved it.”

Since the crew was in the remote mountains, they all really learned how to survive together as a team. “We didn’t have Wi-Fi anywhere we were, we had no cell service,” Berg says. “So we actually interacted with each other and developed a bond.”

Although Berg and Newman knew the show would be violent, they still wanted to give viewers a chance to find emotional touchstones amid the desolation. They also appreciated that at its core the song is not a love letter to America, but a song of protest – Guthrie wrote the lyrics in response to Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America”. “It’s a protest song about perceived injustice, hardship and suffering that Woody (Guthrie) saw across America,” says Berg. “And those things definitely felt appropriate American prehistoric era.”
