The winter weather advisory for the D.C. region has been canceled due to light snow falling overnight

Up to 2 inches of snow could blanket the D.C. region starting Friday evening. Here’s what you need to know:

Several inches of snow blanketed the D.C. region overnight. And there might be some slippery spots out there. But the National Weather Service canceled its winter weather advisory around 5 a.m

Here’s what you need to know:

“Areas of light snow will form from west to east after sunset; a little later around the metro area,” said Steve Rudin, 7News First Alert meteorologist. It starts on Friday around 10 p.m.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser dispatched the city’s snow team on Friday to clean the streets and begin snow removal. She added in a news release that the city’s public works department has experienced delays in trash pickup, but she hopes to resume operations by Monday.

In Virginia, the state police have deployed more police officers and are recommending people avoid major roads out of caution because of the upcoming snowfall.

By sunrise, the snow will ease, leaving a layer of dust of up to 5 centimeters, with higher amounts farther south toward Richmond, Rudin said, adding that untreated surfaces could be slippery.

After the snow passes, morning clouds will give way to sunshine Saturday afternoon with highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s.

The warmer 40-degree temperatures will help melt the snow and ice still covering streets in some neighborhoods, said Veronica Johnson, 7News First Alert chief meteorologist.

“So a lot of it will be off the streets,” Johnson said.

Next Sunday will be all about sunshine, with high temperatures remaining in the lower to mid 30s.
