Texas’ Quinn Ewers projects to be taken in the 2025 NFL Draft

Quinn Ewers’ college future may not include much more.

It appears he has his eyes on the NFL.

In an interview that aired on “College GameDay” before the Texas-Ohio State College Football Playoff semifinals, the Longhorns’ star quarterback bluntly told ESPN’s Pete Thamel that he doesn’t expect to play college football next season to play.

“No, I don’t,” Ewers said when asked if he sees himself in the NCAA Tournament next season, before answering “yes” that he believes in the NFL next season to play.

ESPN then reported that sources close to Ewers said there was an “overwhelming likelihood” that the signal-caller would declare for the draft.

While it is far from final, it is the closest to an answer Ewers has given on his thoughts for 2025, as speculation about his future as a footballer runs rampant.

In late December, On3 reported that an unnamed school was making a $6 million pitch to entice Ewers to play for that team and leave Texas.

Ewers was asked about the rumors about his future on Wednesday and he avoided giving a clear answer.

“I mean, right now I’m just not worried about any of that stuff,” Ewers told reporters on Wednesday, according to USA Today. “I mean, people can say whatever they want to say, but you know, I’m just focused on Friday at this point.”

He was then asked whether a result in the CFP semifinals or possible final would play a role in deciding next season.

“That’s a great question,” he said, adding that his sights are set on the game against the Buckeyes.

Ewers, a transfer from Ohio State, had a breakout year for Texas in 2023, throwing for 3,479 yards (69 percent completion rate) and 22 touchdowns against six interceptions.

However, the 2024 season was more changeable and there were also some injuries.

Ewers threw for fewer yards (3,189) with a lower completion rate (66.5 percent) but led the SEC with 29 touchdowns with Texas one win away from a national title.

If Ewers does declare for the draft, it will be interesting to see where he ends up.

Fellow SEC quarterbacks Jalen Milroe and Jaxson Dart have already reported, and expected top picks Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders are likely to follow suit in the coming days.

Draft analyst Todd McShay recently said on his podcast for The Ringer that experts have told him that Ewers should pursue a transfer instead of turning pro.

“I have had several solicited and unsolicited conversations with people around the league about Quinn Ewers,” McShay said last month. “Every single person I’ve spoken to around the league, every evaluator in the NFL draft process believes Quinn Ewers should graduate.”
