“It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my beautiful son @Rorysykes in the Malibu fires yesterday,” Ms. Sykes said in the post.

“I am completely heartbroken. British-born Australian living in America, a wonderful son, a gift, born on my birthday and his grandmother’s, July 29, 1992, Rory Callum Sykes.”

Mr Sykes is not believed to be among those confirmed dead by officials.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) said DFAT was providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian who may have been affected by the Los Angeles wildfires, but could not comment further due to privacy concerns.

Ms Sykes said her son was born blind, lived with cerebral palsy and lived in a self-contained cottage on the property.

She told 10 News that phone calls she made to the United States emergency number 911 were not connected.

“He said, ‘Mom, leave me,’ and no mother could leave her child. I have a broken arm, I couldn’t lift it, I couldn’t move it,” Ms. Sykes told 10 News.

She said she then drove 400 meters to the nearest fire station to raise the alarm, only to be told there were no water reserves in the local fire hydrants.

“When the fire department brought me back, his cottage had burned to the ground,” Ms. Sykes told 10 News.

She also said her son’s death was not yet included in the official death toll from the Los Angeles fires because cadaver dogs had to find his remains in the rubble of his home.

The official death toll stands at 11, according to Los Angeles authorities, including at least two people who died in the Palisades fire and at least five in the Eaton fire.
