Key question Ben Johnson had to answer

The Patriots have interviewed one of the most popular coaching candidates this cycle and need to think about whether he’s a good fit for them.

New England didn’t schedule any interviews after Friday, so it’s safe to assume Mike Vrabel or Johnson will fill the head coaching vacancy. Vrabel is reportedly the “heavy favorite,” but Johnson hasn’t been completely ruled out.

The team’s interview was conducted virtually in accordance with NFL rules and was limited to three hours. This meant that the sides had little time to clarify the core issues.

“After speaking with multiple league sources, one question emerged when it came to projecting Johnson as head coach: How exactly would he manage his time as a playing head coach?” Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston wrote on Friday.

This head coaching cycle marked the third year in a row that Johnson was involved in talks. He came close to playing with the Carolina Panthers before retiring, and he was reportedly the favorite to land the Washington Commanders job before deciding to give the Detroit Lions another try.

It’s safe to assume Johnson has thought through his head coaching plans, but that was something else the Patriots likely needed to know during their interview with the offensive coordinator. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Krafts were open to being “blown away” by Johnson, and the interview went well, according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.

New England will evaluate its prospects while other teams interview Vrabel and Johnson.
