THE BIG PICTURE

A light layer of snow overnight ended a cold and stormy week. But at least until Monday there will be a short break in the cold before the cold and wind return by the middle of next week. Cloud cover will break during the day today and winds will ease on Sunday. Today’s highs will be around 30°C, while near 40°C is expected on Sunday and Monday. Starting Tuesday, a new front will bring in some more arctic air with northwesterly winds, bringing high temperatures back to near or below freezing and wind chills occasionally reaching the single digits. The cold is likely to weaken further by next weekend, but there are no major thaws in sight. On the other hand, there are no major winter storms in sight, so it will remain mostly cold and mostly dry for a while.

FORECAST DETAILS

SATURDAY

We’ll start the day with increasing clouds through the afternoon, with highs in the 30s. A northwest breeze at 10-15 mph will strengthen slightly in the afternoon, but not as blustery as what we saw earlier this week. Mostly clear skies are expected overnight, with low temperatures in the low 20s.

SUNDAY AND MONDAY

This will likely be the next January “thaw” for the foreseeable future and the fewest cold days in a long time and likely for most of next week as well. Look for a mix of sun and clouds on both Sunday and Monday, with highs of up to 30 degrees both days and manageable winds that do little to cool things down, say 10-15 mph at most. Low temperatures will climb into the lower 20s, so there will be more of a seasonal chill during the day and night, although there will only be strong wind chills for a short period of time.

TUESDAY TO THURSDAY

The mainly cold, mostly dry and often stormy pattern is expected to strengthen and return by mid and late next week. Look for strong northwest winds, which may again reach gusts over 30 mph and deliver colder air and even colder wind chills. Skies will be partly sunny as we stay dry, but highs will be back in the upper 20s to lower 30s Tuesday through Thursday, with lows in the teens, and wind chills will return to the single digits above and below zero back. No snow is forecast for next week, although we may see some showers and a brief mild trend next weekend.
