The Steelers expect to sign the former 8 million quarterback to replace Russell Wilson

The Steelers expect to sign the former $128 million quarterback to replace Russell Wilson

The Pittsburgh Steelers will have several question marks at the quarterback position heading into the 2025 offseason as they have not yet determined their starter and backup for next season.

The Steelers are expected to keep Russell Wilson as the starter in 2025 after he proved to be an upgrade. But this will likely mark the end of Justin Fields’ tenure in Pittsburgh, as he will likely look for a place where he has a chance to start. Fellow backup Kyle Allen is also set to become a free agent.

In a recent article predicting landing spots for several quarterbacks, CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin expects the Steelers to re-sign Wilson and bring in Kansas City Chiefs backup Carson Wentz as insurance.

Benjamin predicts Wilson will sign a two-year, $50 million contract with Pittsburgh. As for Wentz, Benjamin hasn’t given a contract prediction, but we’re assuming he gets a similar deal to the one he has now, which is one year and $3.3 million.

Wentz, a former No. 2 overall pick, once looked like he would be the Eagles’ long-term answer under center, earning him a massive four-year, $128 million contract in 2019. However, injuries and ineffective play have since derailed Wentz’s once-promising career.

Since then, he has served as a starter for the Indianapolis Colts, but that didn’t work out. Wentz then spent stints with the Washington Commanders, the Los Angeles Rams and now the Chiefs.

Even though Wentz is long past his best, he would be a viable backup player in Pittsburgh. He is more than capable of weathering the storm should Wilson get hurt.

Playing for the Steelers could be attractive for Wentz as he has the opportunity to play under offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, assuming he doesn’t get a head coaching job elsewhere. Smith has a proven track record of reviving the careers of down-and-out quarterbacks like Wilson in Pittsburgh and Ryan Tannehill in Tennessee.

The Steelers should try to keep Fields in Pittsburgh in 2025, but if that proves impossible, Wentz would be a solid secondary option to back up Wilson.
