Indiana reclaims the Old Oaken Bucket with a dominant 66-0 win over Purdue

Domination. Extinction. Destruction. Destruction. Demolition. Extermination.

There are many words that can be used to describe what Indiana did to Purdue on Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.

It’s hard to say how much everyone needed this win. The fans returning to the stands, the band members who have spent the last four seasons there and the guys in uniform who have been here.

It’s been a long five years since the Old Oaken Bucket stood in Bloomington. An overtime thriller at West Lafayette in 2019 drew attention before the next season’s game was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Every game played since then has resulted in a fairly decisive Boilermaker victory, with the exception of last season when the Hoosiers went into halftime with a lead but lost control of the game afterward.

Purdue has beaten Indiana a few times. This was merely a return of the favor.

The Ryan Walters era of Purdue football has produced one of the worst teams the Big Ten has seen in years this season. These Boilermakers leave Bloomington with a record of 1-11, which is even worse than the nightmarish 2-10 season the Hoosiers endured in 2021.

Indiana did pretty much whatever it wanted. Hoosier tailbacks, not Walters’ defense, were the ones dealing the hard hits. Ask Ty Son Lawton, who ran over a pair of black and gold jerseys on his way to the end zone in the second quarter.

Then there was secondary school. Kurtis Rourke launched one of the longest touchdown passes in program history after navigating the pocket just long enough to find a wide-open Elijah Sarratt who had nothing between him and the end zone. 84 meters.

He did it again in the third quarter, finding Sarratt darting toward the end zone for a 24-yard touchdown.

It wasn’t a competition. The difference in offensive yardage, Indiana’s 582 to Purdue’s 67, does more than tell the story of how this game went.

The Old Oaken Bucket is your home.
