Jason Statham in David Ayer’s new film

Jason Statham in David Ayer’s new film

“Jason Statham will be one of the most reliable action stars of the 2020s” may not have been on the film industry’s bingo card at the end of 2019, but it seems to be continuing.

The “Transporter” star has enjoyed a career renaissance in recent years, leading the 2023 shark sequel “Meg 2: The Trench” to nearly $400 million at the global box office before settling for the ridiculous (and incredibly funny) action thriller “The Beekeeper” teamed up with David Ayer. Now Amazon MGM is hoping couple Ayer and Statham can bring in even more box office gold after the reunion film “A Working Man.”

“A Working Man” is based on veteran comic book writer Chuck Dixon’s 2014 novel “Levon’s Trade” and was co-written by Ayer and Sylvester Stallone. With these kinds of historical connections to the action genre on both sides of the camera, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the film follows a special ops veteran who is forced to come out of retirement to save a young woman who is trapped he is faced with unimaginable danger.

An official synopsis for the film states: “Levon Cade left behind a successful military career in the intelligence community to lead a simple, functional life. But when his boss’s daughter, who is like family to him, is kidnapped by human traffickers, his search for home finds him discovering a world of corruption far greater than he could have ever imagined.”

In addition to Statham, A Working Man stars Jason Flemyng, Merab Ninidze, Maximilian Osinski, Cokey Falkow, Noemi Gonzalez, Arianna Rivas, Emmett J. Scanlan and Eve Mauro with Michael Peña and David Harbor. Statham, Ayer and Stallone serve as executive producers alongside Chris Long, John Friedberg, Bill Block and Kevin King Templeton.

Ayer continues to keep a busy schedule and will next direct the survival thriller “In the Heart of the Beast” for Paramount, with Damien Chazelle as executive producer. He also remains loyal to the direction of his long-in-development remake of “The Dirty Dozen”.

“A Working Man,” an Amazon MGM release, opens nationwide Friday, March 28. Check out the trailer below.
