SNL’s “Stefon on Halloween”: Why Bill Hader Covered His Mouth

In the weeks leading up to NBC’s three-hour 50th anniversary celebration on Feb. 16, the team behind Saturday Night Live selected one sketch from each season — 50 seasons in 50 days — to celebrate the show’s rich legacy across five decades to reflect. Introducing the sketch selected for Season 38: “Weekend Update: Stefon on Halloween’s Hottest Tips,” starring Bill Hader and Seth Meyers.

When you think of recurring iconic “Weekend Update” characters — Adam Sandler’s “Opera Man” or Cecily Strong’s “Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started a Conversation with at a Party,” for example — Bill’s Stefon ranks high Hader at the top of the list. And while Stefon’s entire “Weekend Update” appearances as the fake news show’s “city correspondent” are a delight, “Stefon on Halloween’s Hottest Tips” is a slow-burner, both for its jokes and the fact that Hader barely holds back can reaction to them.

Stefon’s Halloween appearance took place during host Bruno Mars’ October 20, 2012 episode of Double Duty (in which Hader as Stefon introduced Mars’ second appearance).

“Weekend Update” host Seth Meyers — who had an entire story arc with Stefon that culminated in their wedding in the character’s final appearance — asked him “some of the best places to see in NYC on Halloween.”

“Yes. If you need to check out a place, I know just the right place for you. New York’s hottest club is Jelly Bones,” he told Meyers, switching to a deep bass voice to say the venue’s name. “This accidental home invasion on the Lower Upper Side is the creation of drunken fashion designer Nick Nolte & Gabbana.”

Stefon says New York’s hottest Halloween party has everything – including “my son”

But when it comes to New York’s hottest Halloween party, Stefon Meyers tells you where to be (hiss noise). At this point, Hader shows off his physical comedy skills, effectively turning into a territorial cat for a few seconds. He explains: “This place will have everything: ghosts, ghouls, goblins, my son…”

Somehow Meyers lets go of this new lore (and we never hear from Stefon’s son again), and soon Hader is bursting into giggles as he tries to get away with the next hysterical nightlife trick – and ends up laughing hysterically.

Hader blocks his face with his hand and appears to wipe away a tear before Stefon explains further, explaining that “Frasians” are a health snack made from “raisins that look like Frasier.” But as he begins an extremely suggestive ghost story, Meyers interrupts him. But a plot twist: Meyers is actually ready to hang out with Stefon on October 31st.

“I’ll pick you up at 7 a.m. – where do you live?” Meyers asks.

“Uh, you know the Radio Shack on the 23rd and 7th? I live in a garbage can,” Stefon tells him.

Why is Stefon covering his mouth? SNL?

Although it’s one of the character’s signature tics, the gesture also serves a practical purpose: Bill Hader hid his laughter after author John Mulaney surprised him with new Stefon jokes on the cue cards.

Stand-up comedian, actor, and six-time actor SNL Host John Mulaney created Stefon together with Bill Hader. Mulaney co-wrote Stefon’s performances with the cast member during his time writing the series from 2008 to 2013, and he took pleasure in derailing Hader by making last-minute changes to Stefon’s casting. Just like Hader performed live.

“He’ll hang things up without telling me – or he’ll tell me when I go out. Anything that kind of shakes me up,” Hader told Howard Stern in 2013.

Although you’d never know it by seeing him on stage, Hader admitted he would get “very nervous” before performing live SNLand “I’m someone who sort of compulsively goes through my lines.” “I do them all the time – I go by the cue cards, but I want to know what’s coming, kind of obsessively (…) John knows that,” he added.

While he giggled at times knowing a last-minute change was coming, Hader noted that “the one that really excited me and the one I didn’t know was up there was on Halloween.” That’s the one joke with the “Sidney Applebaum” punchline, and he told Stern he freaked out “as soon as they flipped the cue card.”

“It stopped the show for about a minute. I was done! And on the other side of the cue cards I see John and the other authors,” Hader told Stern. “Everyone is laughing because they’re just waiting for it.”
