Karen Bass LA Fire’s backlash has gone beyond race, not LAFD budget cuts, Yvette Nicole Brown, Kym Whitley

Two Los Angeles-based actresses claimed that embattled Mayor Karen Bass was only facing backlash because of her race – rather than forcing drastic cuts to the fire service and leaving the US as the historic deadly wildfires broke out.

Act Your Age co-stars Yvette Nicole Brown and Kym Whitley defended Bass as calls for her ouster skyrocketed on Saturday.

“She has a spine of steel and has been a black woman in America for a very long time,” Brown told TMZ. “None of this is new.”

Brown, 53, has lived in the City of Angels for nearly three decades but couldn’t recall any other mayor facing the same scrutiny as Bass, suggesting the criticism stemmed from racism.

“We have fires every year, and in the almost 30 years I’ve lived in LA, I can’t remember ever seeing everyone react like that to the mayor and blame one person for a natural disaster said Brown.

“What’s different this time?” she asked.

The angry “Community” alum says she stood up for Bass because she’s “sick” of watching the 71-year-old mayor be the sole scapegoat for the deadly fires, even as the blazes decimated several towns in the area .

“She’s also not the mayor of every community in California, there are people who are angry because she didn’t fix the fires in Malibu,” Brown said. “She’s not the mayor of Malibu. What’s she supposed to do in a city where she’s not the mayor?”

Whitley and her son had to evacuate their Tarzana home as the fire threatened their neighborhood.

The actresses insisted Bass was heartbroken to see a city “she loves” destroyed by the fires, and the city’s citizens called on her to respond.

“Get behind her, support her because you can see in her face that she stays calm,” Whitley said. “Think about it, she has the city to take care of, she doesn’t have time to listen to what these reports say.

“It’s not time to blame, it’s time to resource, she has achieved a lot. We have planes from other countries helping us.”

Firefighters from Mexico landed at Los Angeles International Airport on Saturday to help fight the blaze, a sight welcomed by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The landing of crews south of the border comes a day after Bass rejected the FDNY’s offer to send its resources to the Golden State.

JetBlue offered to fly the New York Bravest to the West Coast, but Bass rejected that position, The Post reported Friday. Her office later denied the snub.

Bass has been criticized for her actions since the Palisades Fire broke out in the Pacific Palisades on Tuesday morning while she was in West Africa for the Ghanaian presidential inauguration.

The Los Angeles Fire Department’s funding was cut after Bass awarded golden contracts to the city’s workers.

The problems began early last year after Bass completed contract negotiations with public sector unions. According to an analysis by the city’s administrator, City Journal reported, the city’s civilian employees pocketed wage increases of 20 to 25 percent over five years in dozens of agreements and other perks that cost the city $4.5 billion over the life of the contracts US dollars cost.

Several celebrities have criticized Bass for her handling of the situation.

Khloe Kardashian took to social media on Friday and called the LA chief “a joke” while defending LAFD Chief Kristin Crowley.

“I stand with YOU, Chief Crowley!!!! You told the truth and had tears in your eyes because I can tell you didn’t even mean to say it but it was THE TRUTH!!!!” she wrote.

Actor Zachary Levi called poor leadership in Southern California “criminally negligent” in the events and preparations leading up to the fires.

“This is just incredible mismanagement, incredibly poor leadership,” the “Shazam” star told Fox News’ Jesse Waters.
