Wolf Moon: How and when to see the full moon shining next to Mars in January

Monday night marks the next full moon and brings an additional surprise for stargazers.

A full moon in January is called a wolf moon because in past decades packs of wolves could be heard outside villages howling at the moon during the winter, according to NASA.

The moon will rise around 5:27 p.m. ET on Monday, January 13, just after sunset.

According to EarthSky, the moon will be most clearly visible at midnight on Monday evening, when it will be directly overhead.

The Wolf Moon will also pass in front of the planet Mars, giving moon watchers a chance to see the bright red planet.

Mars is currently the largest and brightest it will be in 2025, EarthSky reports.

If you’re looking at the Wolf Moon and hoping to catch a glimpse of Mars, EarthSky recommends covering the right half of the moon with a distant object so you can try to see beyond the moonlight.

After Monday, the next full moon is February 12th and is called the snow moon.
