Kendrick Lamar’s “Not like us” has crossed a historic threshold by finally surpassing 1 billion streams on Spotify, making it the first diss song ever to do so – a sure sign of its influence in the music world.

Upon its release on May 4, 2024, “Not Like Us” gained immediate traction, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and breaking a number of streaming records.

Most notably, it set the record for the largest single-day streams of a hip-hop song, surpassing the previous records set by Drake and Lil Baby’s “Girls Want Girls.”

The success did not come without controversy associated with the song. Drake’s company Frozen Moments LLC filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group, alleging that the label used unfair practices to artificially popularize the song.

The petition alleged that UMG allegedly used bots and pay-to-play agreements to boost streaming numbers. UMG denied the allegations and stated that they applied only the highest ethical standards in their marketing campaigns.

Despite the controversy, “Not Like Us” is still at the top of charts and streaming platforms, a testament to how big of a mark Kendrick Lamar has left on hip-hop. The meteoric rise to 1 billion streams further cements the artist’s widespread popularity and enduring appeal.
