Commanders vs. Buccaneers score, live updates: Tampa Bay and Washington meet in NFC wild card playoff showdown

Before the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Washington Commanders head into their NFC Wild Card matchup in Tampa on Sunday night, the scoreboard operator may need to take some time. This game features two of the league’s highest-scoring offenses: the Buccaneers rank fourth (29.5 ppg) and the Commanders finish fifth in the regular season (28.5 ppg). Both clubs also have high pressure in the postseason: Tampa Bay has subsequently won six of seven, defeated Atlanta and won the NFC South, and Washington closed the regular season with a five-game winning streak, which included the win heard about the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jayden Daniels is almost a lock for the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year with his 3,568 yards and 25 touchdown passes, while also leading the Commanders – and second in the NFL among quarterbacks – in rushing yards with 891. His quarterback counterpart Baker Mayfield also posted some impressive numbers this season with 4,500 passing yards and 41 touchdown passes, both career highs for the Seventh year professional.

Live34 updates

  • The Commanders concede a fourth down for a TD to Terry McLaurin

This time, Jayden Daniels was able to get McLaurin to score, and the Commanders made up for the Bucs’ massive mistake. Washington leads 20-17 with less than 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Washington finally making another play in the red zone gave them the lead, but it was so challenging all night that they had to come up with another fourth down attempt.

  • Mayfield fumbles, Bobby Wagner recovers!!!

Disaster for the Buccaneers – Baker Mayfield and Jalen McMillian’s timing was off and the Commanders are back in the red zone and suddenly in charge.

  • Commanders fail on 4th down from the 3 yard line

Tonight is Washington’s third trip into the red zone without a touchdown, and this one featured a 1st-and-goal at the 1-yard line. Brian Robinson goes back and three Jayden Daniels incompletions later, the Bucs have the ball – albeit at their own 3-yard line – and the lead early in the 4th quarter.

  • Zyon McCollum called for pass interference in the end zone, and the Commanders got it at the 1-yard line

Huge penalty on the first play of the 4th quarter and Washington is in business.

  • End of 3rd quarter: Buccaneers 17, Commanders 13

It was a good game in Tampa as the Bucs and Commanders traded points on a 17-13 score in the second half. Both offenses had some bright spots after halftime and it was an exciting duel at Raymond James Stadium.

  • Daniels to Ertz on 4th down

The Commanders try as hard as anyone in the league and in no man’s land, those 4th and 5th place finishes were a breeze. Great play by the rookie QB against the experienced tight end.

  • Washington is back in Tampa Bay territory

It only took three plays, but a holding penalty against Jamel Dean, a run by Jayden Daniels and a drop in the bucket against Terry McLaurin and the Commanders were the Bucs’ 42. The game was up and down from the start of the 3rd quarter

  • Happy Bucky! Bucs touchdown!

Baker Mayfield finds his running back for the passing touchdown. Assist Jalen McMillian for the rub (or pick if you’re a defensive player) to give Irving the lead and it’s 17-13 Tampa Bay with 4:31 left in the fourth quarter.

  • Tampa Bay drives to answer

The Bucs have some CHUNK plays on this drive. First, Mike Evans beat Marshon Lattimore and scored 19 in the passing game, and Bucky Irving made runs of 18 and 10 yards, with the Bucs inside the 10-yard line.

  • Zane Gonzalez makes the 22-yarder, giving Washington a 13-10 lead

It’s the second time the Commanders were in the red zone and didn’t get a touchdown. Given the way Tampa Bay moved the ball late in the first half, the Commanders will certainly like having more points on the field, but they will end up kicking themselves come the second half turns into a touchdown fest after failing to cash in a goal-to-go situation to open the third quarter.

  • Jamel with a HUGE PBU in the end zone

The Commanders will settle for a field goal attempt after the separation intended for Terry McLaurin.

  • Commanders on the march to open the 2nd half

Dyami Brown, welcome to the show. The rookie was great tonight, making catches of 30 and 24 yards on this first drive of the second half.

  • Halftime: Commanders 10, Buccaneers 10

The Commanders were in control for most of the first half, but a late Bucs charge after a good drive ended with a touchdown catch by Mike Evans and we tied the half. Business picked up pace in the second quarter and the Commanders will get the impetus for the second half.

  • Mike Evans’ Hall of Fame speech will be so much fun

He’ll be rooting for a lot of quarterbacks… will he be rooting for Marshon Lattimore?

  • On a third down late in the first half, Baker Mayfield does WHAT?

If you’re not a Bucs fan, is there a small part of you that wishes he could be the quarterback for your team?

  • Zane Gonzalez scores from 52 and Washington leads 10-3

The Commanders were in control of this game, but are only ahead 10-3. They have played 34 games, the Buccaneers have played 16, but there is 1:52 on the clock and the Bucs have two timeouts before halftime.

  • Another Bucs penalty is a brutal decision

Yaya Diaby sacked Jayden Daniels on a third down, but a defensive holding call in the secondary gave the Commanders a first down and they’re on the move again, entering Bucs territory. Tampa was rejected three times for 28 yards, and all were costly.

  • Bucs punt after penalty

Baker Mayfield was fine in the early going, but the Bucs kept getting behind the posts. A chop block cost the Buccaneers 15 yards and they also received a holding penalty, which was declined before sending the ball back to Washington. Midway through the second quarter, the Commanders still lead 7-3.

  • Jayden Daniels beats Dyami Brown for the score

After stopping the bleeding, the Commanders capped a 17-play, 92-yard drive with a touchdown pass. This series lasted more than nine minutes and with just under 9:30 minutes left in the first half, the Commanders took a 7-0 lead.

  • Can the Commanders sign Stitch Duran mid-game? Asking for a friend

Daniels needs the cut man and we’re not even halfway through the fight yet.
