A big takeaway from the Bruins’ blowout loss to the Blue Jackets

After a three-day holiday break, the Boston Bruins lost 6-2 to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night at Nationwide Arena to begin a home game.

Boston’s trip to the losing list dropped its historic season record to 19-14-4, while Columbus improved to 15-15-6.

At the end of the opening period, Columbus beat Boston 12-5, but the score was tied 1-1. However, the Bruins’ performance in the second period was disastrous.

Boston looked flat and lacked cohesion throughout. Most of their passes were missed and they were unable to maintain pressure in the offensive zone, although they did register ten shots on Blue Jackets goaltender Elvis Merzlikins.

The Blue Jackets took over the game and never looked back.

Columbus scored three goals in 2:47 to give the Blue Jackets a comfortable 4-1 lead before scoring a power play goal with 46 seconds left. Dmitri Voronkov’s goal, his second goal of the game, was Columbus’ third power play goal of the game. It was the fourth time this season that the Bruins conceded three goals while shorthanded.

The Blue Jackets played a much more disciplined game than the Bruins and only committed two infractions in the contest. Boston was unable to capitalize, as Merzlinkins stopped all seven of the Bruins’ power-play shots — including an amazing right-pad save on Charlie McAvoy. Merzlinkins finished the night by saving 23 of 25 shots on goal. Meanwhile, Boston goalkeeper Joonas Korpisalo’s play between the posts was compounded by poor defense and errors. He stopped 27 of 33 shots in the loss.

The Bruins will look to get back in the win column when the Black and Gold return home to host the Blue Jackets on Saturday night. TD Garden puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET, and you can watch all the action as well as an hour of pregame coverage live on NESN.
