James Mangold’s new Bob Dylan Biopic A complete unknown is an absolute triumph, with Critics rave about outstanding performances by big names like Timothée Chalamet, Elle Fanning and Edward Norton. Another big star that people can’t stop talking about is Monica Barbaro, whose other big film featured the role of Lt. Natasha “Phoenix” Trace in the record-breaking 2022 blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick. Her role as legendary folk singer Joan Baez is being hailed as career-boosting, and as awards season approaches, many are keeping an eye on Barbaro’s chances for big nominations. Unfortunately, she’s already been overlooked by the Golden Globes, but she still seems overjoyed by the film’s recognition.

I recently spoke with Monica Barbaro on behalf of Monica Barbaro A completely unknown, coincidentally in the morning that the Golden Globe nominations were announced. When I asked her what kind of surreal press day she had, she told me the facts:

I wondered: Are the Golden Globe announcements today? … I meditated because you don’t want to get too upset and just accept it calmly. And then I opened my phone and there we were. That was it. And then I was the one texting people and blowing up their phones.

Looking at the interview clip at the top of this article, it’s clear that the statement about “blowing up people’s phones” doesn’t mean she made grievances, although it wasn’t highlighted. The film was nominated in the Best Feature Film – Drama category and this recognition is something everyone involved can be proud of. As mentioned, she was also part of the extremely successful Top Gun: Maverick, and she went on to compare the two experiences:

When we made this film, we had no idea it would come out this year. I never thought things would turn around so quickly. I’ve only been in one film, which, as you know, had “Globe” and “Academy” (recognition). Have you heard about it? And that was just much later when we were promoting the film. So it’s kind of crazy to make this announcement on a junket day. This is completely new for me.

She is of course referring to the fact Top Gun: Maverick was notoriously delayed due to the global pandemic, so the fact that A complete unknown It must have been an unusual whirlwind to have managed to achieve such a quick turnaround. There are conversations about a loner Consequence is in the works and it’s clear that the cast and crew of Top Gun have remained close, whatever Tom Cruise himself made an appearance to support Monica Barbaro at a screening of A complete unknown. Barbaro is said to have done it impresses Cruise and Co. Given her involvement on set, we can only assume that she will return for the conclusion of the trilogy.
