A main character suffers a gruesome death as Ranch’s fate is revealed

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Season 5, Episode 14 of Yellowstone.

After five seasons Yellowstone ended the series finale with twists and a dramatic death.

When patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner) was killed in the Season 5, Part 2 premiere, his family members vowed to avenge his murder. In the series finale, daughter Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) fulfilled her promise – to save the country And Make those who killed their father pay.

The episode begins with Brother Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) putting into action the plan hatched in last week’s episode to sell the Yellowstone land to the Broken Rock Reservation.

When Kayce meets with High Chief Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), he explains that his family cannot afford the inheritance taxes on the ranch.

“My vision showed me two paths. On the one hand, my family. On the other the ranch. I could only save one. “I used to think that meant one couldn’t be saved, but then I realized it just meant that I couldn’t save it… But you can,” says Kayce.

He makes an offer to Rainwater – to sell the land for what it was worth when his ancestors bought it for $1.25 an acre. “That’s what it was sold for when they took it away. And that is the price I offer you.”

And he adds two conditions: that East Camp be preserved for his family and that they never develop or sell Yellowstone. “We can’t sell our land, Kayce, we have laws that prohibit it,” Rainwater says.

He promises Kayce that he will respect the country. “It is sacred and we will treat it that way.”

“That’s all I ask,” Kayce says. Both take blood with their pocket knives and give it to each other. “We’re brothers now,” Rainwater says. “For each other and for the country.”

The family later lays John to rest. During the small ceremony, Beth has a private moment between herself and her father’s coffin, hoping that he will realize that she saved the country. “We won,” she whispers to the coffin.

“It breaks my heart that I had to lose you because of this,” Beth says. “I’ll let you rest now, Daddy.”

As Beth places a flower on his grave at the end of the ceremony, she whispers, “I will avenge you.”

She rushes back to the house, changes clothes and drives away in her car. An hour later, husband Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) realizes where she’s going. He runs after her, but she reaches her adopted brother Jamie’s (Wes Bentley) house before Rip.

Jamie returns home after giving a speech in which he vows to carry on his father’s legacy. Beth waits and hits him over the head while attacking him with pepper spray.

He starts fighting her violently and punching her in the face. As he tries to clear his eyes of the spray, she hits him over the head with a crowbar as he kicks her to the ground.

Beth tells Jamie that they sold the land to the reservation, and he responds by kicking her in the face and putting her in a chokehold. “Do you know what will become of you? Another secret in this family,” Jamie says, just as Rip comes in and saves Beth.

Before Rip can kill Jamie, Beth stands up and screams “Wait” – as she walks over and stabs Jamie in the heart.

She calls 911 while Rip disposes of his body and sets Jamie’s car on fire. Police believe Beth went to Jamie’s house after he failed to show up for her father’s funeral. According to the story Beth told the cops, they believe Jamie started hitting her, she tried to fight him off, and when she woke up he was gone.

The series ends on sentimental notes, including Beth walking through the empty family home as she moves to Dillon, Montana with Rip. Kayce takes his son Tate to buy cattle for the land they will live on. When he leaves his family’s property, he refuses to keep the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch sign to create something new.

In the final moments, Elsa Dutton’s voice is heard 1883 reflects the evolution of Yellowstone land as members of the reservation move onto the property. Mo, Rainwater’s right-hand man, stops children knocking over the headstones of Dutton family members’ graves and puts them all back in their place. “They protected this country, they died for this country, and in this country they will stay,” he says.

The final scene shows Beth and Rip on their new property, enjoying what their new, tranquil surroundings will bring – and preparing a possible offshoot of their new life in Dillon.

Yellowstone Season 5 will air on Paramount Network.
