A Maui woman who disappeared in Los Angeles was seen voluntarily crossing into Mexico

While searching for Hannah Kobayashi, 30, who disappeared during a stop in Los Angeles last month, investigators announced Monday that she was seen crossing the border into Mexico, appeared uninjured and is now considered a “voluntary missing person.”

Hannah Kobayashi traveled from Maui to LA on November 8th.

Investigators there said she intentionally missed her connecting flight to New York, where she wanted to visit an aunt.

The Maui native was spotted at a LeBron James event at The Grove a day later, with family members saying they received worrying text messages from her.

Then, on November 11, at around 10 p.m., she was seen at the Pico subway station near the Crypto.com Arena with an unknown person.

As the weeks passed and the search intensified and more family members traveled to LA to look for her, they publicly stated that they believed Hannah may have been injured by someone else.

However, police said Kobayashi was seen on LAX security cameras on November 11 as she picked up her luggage, which had originally been checked through to New York.

“The investigation also revealed that Kobayashi knowingly left LAX with her luggage and traveled to Union Station,” an LAPD press release said. “While at Union Station, she used her passport to purchase a bus ticket to a destination near the Mexican border.”

Investigators from the LAPD Missing Persons Unit traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border on Dec. 1, where they viewed surveillance footage of the 30-year-old entering Mexico from San Ysidro on Nov. 12.

Where is Hannah Kobayashi? What we know

While she was in Mexico, the search for her continued in LA. Things took a tragic turn on Nov. 24 when her father, Ryan Kobayashi, was found dead in a parking lot near LAX, where the family’s search was the focus.

The LAPD said he died by suicide.

Ryan spoke to KTLA just days before his death in hopes of reaching his daughter.

“I miss her,” he said. “I just want her to know this and for her to come forward – anything.”

At Monday’s news conference, investigators said that before she left Maui, the 30-year-old expressed a desire to say goodbye to modern connectivity, adding that it was unclear whether she still had her cellphone.

Additionally, authorities said Kobayashi is not suspected of any criminal activity and that her designation as a voluntary missing person reflects a balance between respecting her privacy concerns and ensuring that all investigative actions are conducted within legal and ethical standards.

“Our priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of Ms. Kobayashi,” LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said at the news conference. “We urge Ms. Kobayashi to contact her family, law enforcement, or U.S. Embassy personnel to let us know she is safe. She has the right to privacy and we respect her decision, but we also understand the concern her loved ones feel. A simple message could reassure those who care.”
