A migrant suspected of setting a woman on fire should be the final straw: end New York’s sanctuary city laws

The recent atrocity against illegal immigrants should remove any doubt: It is no longer time to end New York’s sanctuary city policy.

The horrific atrocity of this atrocity is simply unimaginable, even by Gotham standards.

According to police, Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala, set fire to a sleeping woman on an F train at the Coney Island station and then watched contentedly as she burned alive.

A medieval level of cruelty – and a predictably sick result of a completely misguided policy that has turned the city into a haven for border crossers.

They include gangsters, human traffickers, drug dealers, street thugs, and Hannibal Lecter-level psychos like the monster that roiled this harmless woman minding her business in a subway car.

Why Target Sanctuary Cities Rules?

Consider: Zapeta-Calil crossed the border in Arizona in 2018 and was promptly deported (thanks to policies in place under then-President Donald Trump).

He then entered again the country and at some point made his way to New York, where local policies guarantee migrants shelter, food and other taxpayer-funded assistance And ban police from working with ICE to deport even those who commit new crimes.

In other words, he went where he could best do whatever he wanted without much regard for the law or fear of consequences.

Zapeta-Calil is believed to have lived here for more than a year and received a transit summons in 2023 (strong evidence that transit criminals pose a danger to society at large).

And here we are today, with a crime so heinous and senseless that not even the most articulate progressive could reasonably excuse or justify a policy that prevents ICE from pursuing criminal migrants.

They’ll try, of course — while twisting themselves into pretzels to defend the absurd law that was expanded under Mayor Bill de Blasio and requires a law conviction before migrants are handed over to ICE. . . If ICE randomly asks.

This law has turned the city into a utopia for murderous migrants and a nightmare for its victims and everyone else.

What does the city need to reconsider such self-destructive madness?

Mayor Adams, new NYPD Chief Jessica Tisch, and sensible council members should work as closely as possible with new border czar Tom Homan to send criminal migrants home.

President-elect Trump and Congress must pass legislation that, if necessary, cuts federal funding to places with crazy sanctuary laws like New York.

And every day, New Yorkers across the political spectrum must tell their council representatives that their humanitarian play appears to have cost another life, in the cruelest way possible.

Shortly before? Expect more and more carnage.
