A psychologist and MSU professor was killed in the Oxford shooting

For psychologist and teacher Barbara Wolf, helping people was part of her life’s work.

When she saw a stranded driver on the side of the road on Christmas Eve, the 71-year-old healer and educator stopped to help, according to authorities.

Tragically, her life ended when the man stuck in a ditch pointed a gun at her and fatally shot her.

“This heinous and disturbing act of violence is so heinous on multiple levels that the suspect deserves to be held fully accountable and never see the light of day,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said in a statement Saturday. four days after a gunman shot and killed several people on a side street in Oxford Township.

Wolf, of Oxford Township, died in the shooting. Her 38-year-old daughter, who was in the car with her, was shot but is expected to recover. Another person was also injured.

Bouchard’s comments came shortly after murder, carjacking and gun possession charges were announced against the suspect: Malik Webb, a 29-year-old Genesee County ex-convict with a history of gun violence who was paroled despite his conviction early last year another gun crime in prison.

“This is another tragic case where a convicted criminal with previous weapons offenses was out too early and in a position to injure others. “There must be changes in our criminal justice system that prevent people caught carrying and using weapons illegally from simply being sent back out to harm others,” Bouchard said. “They need to know about and receive predictable and harsh punishments if they commit these crimes.”

“Instead,” Bouchard continued, “we have a grieving family who will now mark a precious time of year as a reminder of a preventable murder.”

Wolf was an assistant professor at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine and worked as a clinical psychologist at the McLaren Health Care System, which called the tragedy “a senseless act of violence that took the life of one of our finest.”

“As news of this tragedy has spread, there is great sadness, shock and sadness for the many lives Barb touched, both at McLaren and in the communities she served,” the hospital system said in a statement, emphasizing that Wolf is committed to the “mental health and emotional well-being of so many as a clinical psychologist and teacher.”

Webb, who is being held without bail, was arraigned Saturday in 52-1 District Court in Novi on several charges, including aggravated murder, auto theft and possession by a felon. If convicted of murder, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.

According to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, this is a series of events that occurred on Christmas Eve in Oxford Township when several good Samaritans stopped to help a motorist who appeared to be in trouble. The case involves seven different victims during a series of incidents, all of which occurred in quick succession. According to the prosecutor’s office, the following happened:

Around 6:20 p.m., a man drove into a parking lot near the corner of M-24 and Oakwood and crashed into a wooden pole before backing up, nearly hitting another car and then crashing into the pole again. Two women stopped to help and asked if he was OK.

In response, he pointed a handgun at her and then drove south on Lapeer Road. Then he met Wolf and her daughter. They jumped when they noticed a car that had crashed into a tree and stopped to see if the driver was OK.

The driver allegedly ran toward the driver’s side of Wolf’s car and attempted to enter her vehicle. Wolf tried to drive away, but the stranded driver shot into her car, hitting both Wolf and her daughter.

Another person, a 39-year-old woman, was driving down the road, saw a car in a ditch and turned to check on the vehicle. However, when she stopped, the gunman allegedly pointed a gun at her head, demanded her car keys and told her to get into the vehicle with him.

She ran away. The shooter attempted to drive away in his vehicle, but was unable to do so. As the victim ran toward another car, he heard several gunshots.

A separate vehicle carrying two people, a 56-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman, was driving down the road and saw one vehicle in the ditch and another parked on the roadway. The driver slowed to see if anyone needed help when the gunman walked up to the victim’s truck and said people were hurting and needed help.

The shooter then climbed onto the driver’s side running board of the truck and stated that he was lost and needed help getting somewhere. The shooter allegedly pointed a gun at the driver and attempted to open the rear door of the vehicle.

The driver – a 56-year-old man from Oxford – was shot in the arm but escaped after freeing the gunman from his vehicle.

Officers later located a 39-year-old Oxford Township woman who had been at the park and ride when Webb pointed a gun to her head as she attempted to drive away in her vehicle. Officers also located Webb, took him into custody without incident, and seized the 9mm handgun used in the crime spree.

Wolf was taken to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The other injured victims were also treated at a nearby hospital. One remains in serious condition with multiple serious injuries. The other was treated and released.
