KANSAS CITY, Mo. – As the calendar flips to 2025, the script for winter weather in the eastern half of the country also changes.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, the start of winter was very quiet from the central Plains to the Ohio Valley, with most areas well below average for snow. That will change this weekend as a widespread severe winter storm is expected to have widespread impacts on these areas and more.

The central Plains and lower Ohio Valley will likely see a mix of snow and ice on Sunday. Sunday night, the rest of the Ohio Valley, the Mid-South, the central Appalachians and possibly the Mid-Atlantic will be affected.

The storm is expected to weaken on Monday as it crosses the Appalachian Mountains, although wintry weather is still expected across the Mid-Atlantic and possibly as far south as the Carolinas, the FOX Forecast Center said.
