A storm in San Francisco overnight uproots trees, damages cars and breaks windows

The major Storm overnight caused major problems in many parts of San Francisco. City workers were overwhelmed by the amount of downed trees and power lines.

“We are very lucky that the tree didn’t fall like that because it would have crushed my brother. He stays right there,” Henry Jimenez said, pointing to his brother’s bedroom.

Instead, the large tree fell in the opposite direction, crushing a car in front of Jimenez’s house.

Public Works closed its block on Folsom Street, between 25th and 26th streets, because three trees damaged cars and shattered windows on two homes.

Jimenez, a lifelong resident of the Mission District, said he has never seen winds this strong.

“The Tornado warning woke me up and then it was just so loud I thought the windows were blown out. So I ran to the hallway because there were no windows,” Jimenez remembers.

Unlike Jimenez, many people told CBS News Bay Area they fell back asleep after the tornado alert on their cellphone woke them up at 5:52 a.m. Saturday.

“I didn’t even take it seriously. I thought, ‘There’s no way a tornado is actually going to come through here,'” said Matthew Phillips of San Francisco.

City officials said they were not aware of any confirmed reports of tornadoes in the city.

But they said the wind was extremely gusty. Strong winds uprooted several trees in Golden Gate Park.

“This is some of the craziest damage I’ve ever seen. I can only imagine there must be chaos in people’s backyards all over the city,” said Phillips, who also works as an arborist.

Public Works spokeswoman Rachel Gordon said they are prioritizing major incidents involving life and safety issues.

“Right now we are doing real triage. The trees that are on the property, the trees that are on lines, the trees that are on cars or on the road, those are the ones that the tree crews remove first.” The ones that don’t cause major problems right away and block traffic, we’ll get rid of them as quickly as possible,” Gordon said.

Workers closed a section of San Jose Avenue and nearby Arlington Street in the Glen Park neighborhood.

Strong winds knocked down about a dozen trees on these roads. Some of them damaged parked cars.

“There is one fallen tree after another along the Bernal Cut. You can see cars being crushed,” said neighbor Bok Choy Mathewson.

In the Mission District, trees and large branches blocked lanes and driveways.

On Guerrero Street, firefighters removed heavy roof tiles that would fall onto the sidewalk.

In the Outer Richmond, trees and power lines landed on parked cars on Fulton Avenue.

Jimenez said he was glad it wasn’t worse.

“Everyone came out healthy,” Jimenez said.

San Francisco officials said there were no reported injuries. They said it would take a few more days to clear all the trees and debris.
