The winter storm is coming today

OH YES. Some good food. HAPPY BELLIES. It’s really cold down there. And they got hit by that winter storm there in Dallas yesterday. You can tell it’s starting to drift east now, but there may be a little snow on the back today. BUT THINGS DEVELOP. The sun should come out today and things will melt away a bit as we get closer to game time. BUT BUT THERE IS OUR SYSTEM. Widespread impacts from far eastern New Mexico to northern Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and Arkansas. From that to getting some good, heavy snow is still in the way for us today. These impacts can be seen extending from the Southern Plains to the Carolinas and parts of Virginia. You may have heard yesterday that our winter storm update was upgraded to a winter storm warning as expected, but our forecast has not changed. This is more of a formality thing, you know, the closer we get to the event, the more we let people know that things are about to get into full swing. So that’s the case. WINTER STORM WARNING FOR ALL FRIDAY AFTERNOON. LATER TODAY UNTIL SATURDAY MORNING AS THIS THING IS REALLY STARTING. One thing that strikes me this morning is that our air is very, very dry, like bone dry. Therefore, some of the moisture moving this afternoon will first have to overcome some of that dry air before the snowflakes reach the ground and the system sets in. AND THEN we start seeing these clusters. So let me schedule the time for you. JUST A FEW CLOUDS THIS MORNING. It’s going to be a pretty cold and cloudy day, especially before it starts snowing. NO PROBLEMS FOR THE MORNING COMMUTE, NO PROBLEMS AT LUNCH EVEN. BUT IN THE EARLY AFTERNOON WE WILL SEE THE FIRST SNOWFLAKES THAT I THINK WILL REACH OUR WESTERN COUNTIES. AND THEN, BY DINNER, THE SNOW WAS DISTRIBUTED OVER THE ENTIRE AREA. And that could cause problems on your Friday evening commute. Depends on how early or late it starts snowing. As far as impact on your Friday evening commute, I would plan for some slick roads right now, especially the side streets. LATER TONIGHT. The treacherous journey continues overnight with snow falling primarily north of I-40 and south of I-85. Slight freezing sleet is likely to occur overnight in Lexington, Asheboro, Siler City and similar locations. And then this is a fast system. EVERYTHING GOES OFF BEFORE THE SUNRISE ON SATURDAY MORNING, AND THEN THE SUN COMES OUT ON SATURDAY. So this will all come and go pretty quickly, but it will definitely give us a strong hint of wintry weather before it’s all said and done. Here is my updated snow and sleet forecast map for this morning. I still think most of us are on track for a nice 2 to 3 inches from this system, south and east of I-85. Parts of Southern DAVIDSON, RANDOLPH and MONTGOMERY Counties will likely see a little more sleet and a little more ice mix IN, ESPECIALLY TONIGHT. So that will impact the total amount of snowfall. But the further north and west you go, the more likely it is that everything will snow, and perhaps there is the potential for a few higher totals, perhaps 3 to 4 inches in some places for the mountains and foothills. BUT HERE IN THE HEART OF THE TRIAD, 2 TO 3IN SHOULD BE A GOOD BET FOR US IF THIS GOES AWAY AGAIN. It starts sometime between 1 and 4 this afternoon. WHILE THE FIRST SNOWFLAKES ARE MOVING IN. IT WAS SO COLD THIS WEEK THAT IT IMMEDIATELY STICKED TO EVERYTHING. On Friday evening it will remain snowy and a wintry mix. And then it all fades away, probably until you wake up on Saturday morning. So it’s a cold and cloudy day. And those snow showers will begin this afternoon and continue, if at all possible, into the evening. I would stay off the road from Friday evening to Saturday morning. TRAVEL WILL LIKELY BE PRETTY DIFFICULT AND THE ROADS WILL REMAIN CLOUDY FOR MOST OF THE WEEKEND, BUT IT WILL IMPROVE BY THE EARLY NEXT WEEK. WE HAVE LOTS OF SUNSHINE AND DRY WEATHER ON MONDAY, TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY, BUT
