Update: Cold temperatures and blowing snow will result in closures, delays and power outages Thursday morning.

Officials say people should allow more time for the trip.

Due to the low temperatures, natural melting does not occur, and while the plow vehicles can get the snow off the road, the wind blows it right back onto them.

Due to snowy road conditions, some schools were forced to close or experienced delays.

Scattered snow showers are expected and while the accumulation will not be large, visibility will be poor due to blowing and drifting snow!

A WINTER STORM WARNING has been issued for Berrien, Cass and St. Joseph counties in Michigan and St. Joseph (eastern), Elkhart and LaGrange counties in Indiana from 5:00 p.m. Wednesday to 1:00 a.m. Friday.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for LaPorte, St. Joseph (Western), Kosciusko and Marshall Counties in Indiana from 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through 1:00 a.m. Eastern Time Friday.

The list of closures and delays can be found here.

Gusts of wind have also caused thousands of power outages.

A look at the Indiana Michigan power outage map shows that 5,491 people are currently without power.

Although they are scattered throughout the region, Berrien County appears to be the hardest hit.

NIPSCO reported more than 1,600 homes and businesses without power in its service area.

The cold won’t last forever – maximum temperatures will rise to almost 40°C by Sunday. At the beginning of next week it will be so warm that it will probably rain instead of snow!

The National Weather Service issued a WINTER STORM WARNING for Berrien and Cass counties in Michigan from 10 a.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Tuesday. A WINTER STORM WARNING is also in effect for St. Joseph County, Indiana from 3:00 p.m. Monday to 10:00 a.m. Tuesday.

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY is also in effect for Elkhart and LaPorte counties in Indiana and St. Joseph County in Michigan from 3:00 p.m. Monday to 10:00 a.m. Tuesday.

It will start to snow lightly on Monday, but it will become heavier in the afternoon.

A band of very heavy snow will form overnight, stretching from southwest Michigan to across the state line.

This strong band will likely fluctuate Monday night into early Tuesday morning, producing heavy snowfall in places. Some parts of Berrien and Cass counties could see 8 inches or more of snowfall by Tuesday morning, while most parts could see 4 to 6 inches of snowfall.

There shouldn’t be as much snow in areas further south.

Tuesday morning commutes are likely to be affected as roads become snow-covered and slick.

The snowfall will taper off late Tuesday morning, leaving behind cold air. Highs will be near freezing on Tuesday.

More lake effect snow is possible by the end of the week after a system brings a mix of rain and snow mid-week.
