A winter storm warning is in effect for the Louisville region for Sunday through Monday

WARNING: A winter storm warning is in effect from early Sunday evening through Monday evening. The first major winter storm of the season is coming soon, with a variety of potentially treacherous impacts, including dangerous ice and lots of snow.CLOSURES | INTERACTIVE RADAR | ACTIVE WEATHER ALERTS Our highly advertised storm will begin impacting the region Sunday morning. Initially, snowfall is expected at the front edge of the precipitation field, which will begin in the early to mid-morning hours. This band of snow will likely be moderate to heavy and may produce several inches of snow as it moves northeast. The snow will turn to sleet and then freezing rain Sunday afternoon into the evening. A large zone of freezing rain is expected across far southern Indiana and north-central Kentucky, including the Louisville metropolitan area, where significant icing is possible. As winds are expected to be quite gusty, some power outages are expected. As temperatures continue to warm, any freezing rain will turn to rain, particularly in southern parts of Kentucky Sunday evening. As we approach Monday there will be frequent areas of drizzle and freezing drizzle, but as the upper energy of this system moves through, another band of light to intermittently moderate snowfall will develop Monday morning, continuing into the midday hours. This band will have the potential to produce a few more inches of snow. Adding up the snow/sleet we’re expecting on Sunday and Monday, 5 to 6 inches seems like a pretty good bet in the metro area with higher totals heading north and lighter amounts as you head south. Ice-wise, the biggest concern from this entire storm will be near and south of the I-64 corridor. 1/4 inch to 3/4 inch is expected. The ice can cause power outages and road problems. Check power outages: Duke | LG&ERoad Conditions: Kentucky and Indiana A quick overview of timing Conditions will begin to deteriorate late Sunday morning around Louisville. The metro will likely see snow morning through afternoon on Sunday, with sleet and freezing rain Sunday afternoon into the night. Snow will begin again on Monday morning and will continue until the afternoon. There may be a brief respite early Monday morning before more snow falls, but the winter storm won’t really develop until Monday evening. And the rainfall is here to stay as temperatures will remain well below freezing over the following days – we’re talking bitterly cold, sometimes in the single digits – so you can expect the impact to be persistent.
