After the ball drop on New Year’s Eve the temperatures will also drop.

BUFFALO, NY – Tuesday night temperatures will be in the 30s to 40s with a chance of showers for the New Year’s Eve Ball Drop in Buffalo.

A Winter Storm Watch was issued for Southern Erie, Wyoming, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties from Wednesday morning through Sunday afternoon.

Temperatures will be colder enough on Wednesday to convert any rain to snow and will also favor snow development overnight, particularly east and southeast of the Lakes.

Lake effect snow is expected to form during Wednesday and lake effect bands could continue into the weekend.

Most of the snow will fall well south of Buffalo. The air will be very dry and the wind direction won’t be great for one of the big lake effect events we’re used to, but still parts of the Southern Tier and Ski Country will likely see a decent amount of snow over a year-long period give few days.

As we say goodbye to 2024, stay updated on the sudden return of winter weather.

January is usually cold here and there is some snow, but keep in mind that this January will be colder than average and there may be several lake effect events.
