A Note on winter weather Effective from 10:00 p.m. Sunday to 11:00 a.m. Monday for Sussex, Passaic, Warren, Morris, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Westchester, Ulster, Dutchess and Fairfield counties.

Our latest round of rainy weather is now coming to the region. It will be fairly light at first, increasing in intensity as the night progresses. Far from being a major winter storm, this system is more of a nuisance that could disrupt Monday morning commutes. The minimum temperatures on Sunday night will be mainly around 30°C, with around 20°C in the north and west.

While most areas will see rain, some areas, particularly the north and west of the city, could see a mix of wintry rainfall. As this event begins, the predominant winter precipitation type across our northwestern zones will be snow. However, a transition to freezing rain can then be expected for a while, eventually transitioning to plain rain as warmer air enters the system.

The most worrying time is the period of freezing rain, as even a light layer of ice on the roads can be dangerous. Fortunately, this is unlikely to last long. Ice accumulations can range from a light glaze to a few hundredths of an inch. The total amount of snow will also be rather small, mainly between 2.5 and 10 cm. And as far as rainfall totals go, most areas will average about a half inch to an inch.

The peak time for all types of precipitation is expected to be between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. The rest of Monday will then feature occasional light showers and some drizzle. Highs will become milder, reaching the upper 40s and lower 50s. These mild temperatures will become even milder through Tuesday, when highs could reach the low 60s. There will be several more chances for mostly light rain over the next week.
