Abdukodir Khusanov: Manchester City agree £33.6m deal for Lens defender

Manchester City have agreed a €40m (£33.6m) deal with Lens for centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov.

Sources with knowledge of the deal say there are additional bonuses associated with the sale and the player will have to undergo a medical before the transfer is officially confirmed.

City coach Pep Guardiola is determined to strengthen his squad after the reigning Premier League champions slipped to sixth in the table – 12 points behind leaders Liverpool – after a difficult few months.

The club is also in negotiations with Brazilian club Palmeiras for teenage defender Vitor Reis, although the club’s president was quoted as saying that reports that he was keen to make money from the 18-year-old were “not correct”.

Additionally, City are excited to welcome Egyptian striker Omar Marmoush after the 25-year-old’s impressive performances for Eintracht Frankfurt this season.

Khusanov will become the first Uzbek player to join a Premier League club once his move is completed. He will also be City’s first significant January signing since the arrival of Aymeric Laporte in 2018.

It underlines Guardiola’s determination to turn City’s fortunes around and overcome a chronic injury situation that has left him without defenders in the first half of the season.

Ruben Dias has not played since the derby defeat to Manchester United on December 15 and will not feature in Saturday’s FA Cup third round game against second division side Salford City.

England’s John Stones will also miss the game, while Nathan Ake has already had two extended absences due to injury this season.

Lens paid just 100,000 euros (£84,000) for Khusanov from Belarusian club Energetik-BGU 18 months ago.

However, he has developed rapidly and has made 13 appearances in Ligue 1 and 18 international matches for Uzbekistan so far this season.

Khusanov scored his first goal for the club in his last appearance, a French Cup game against Paris St-Germain on 22 December.

City have also received some welcome news with the return of Oscar Bobb to training after the 21-year-old Norwegian was out for five months with a broken leg.
