Above average temperatures, wind and a possible rain shift

We start today’s weather update with a view from Agua Caliente Casino, where the sky is partly cloudy. There are currently two cloud levels above us – medium and high fair weather clouds – but they are not bringing any rain to the surface. The region remains dry and temperatures are still above normal in recent days. Yesterday we had a high of 23°C, well above the average 20°C. We expect more of the same today, with highs reaching into the mid-70s again.

However, the air quality warning for the region has been extended until this evening and could last until Saturday. This is particularly important for areas at the western end of the valley and San Gorgonio Pass. There is currently a ban on burning wood to reduce airborne particulate matter, which can worsen air quality. Keep this in mind if you plan to spend time outdoors in these areas.

Despite the cloud cover, there is currently no rain in sight for Southern California. Radar is clear over the region and precipitation remains well to the north. Northern California is experiencing a system moving into Central California, bringing snow to the mountains and some thunderstorms to the central part of the state. Luckily, this system is not expected to bring rain to Southern California.

Later today we will see winds increasing slightly from the west due to this northerly system, however there are no wind warnings in effect. The wind may become gusty at times, but overall it will not be too extreme. Palm Springs will see highs of 76°F, while Indio will reach 75°F. Low temperatures overnight are expected to dip into the 40s, but wind will help spread temperatures evenly across the region.

Temperatures will remain warm and slightly above normal over the weekend. High temperatures on Saturday will be in the low 70s, which is about 5 degrees above the typical average. By Sunday, temperatures may climb into the high 70s, skies will be mostly sunny and the chance of rain will be slim to none.

Looking ahead, there will be a possible change in the weather early next week. The GFS forecast scaled back the expected rain, but some showers were visible over Arizona and west of us. Southern California is likely to remain dry, with strong northerly winds expected to be the main feature of the week. On Tuesday and Wednesday there will be sustained winds of about 30 mph around San Gorgonio Pass and areas north of I-10, with gusts further south in the valley. These winds could be the main weather event next week, but that is still a few days away so the forecast is subject to change.

Today and Tomorrow: Highs in the mid 70s with some clouds moving in and out of the area.
Sunday: A chance for temperatures above 70 degrees and mostly sunny skies.
Monday: 78°F in Palm Springs, dry conditions remaining.
Tuesday and Wednesday: Strong northerly winds with a slight chance of mountain showers.
Stay tuned for updates as things may change with the approaching weather system. For now, enjoy the warm and dry conditions!
